Just bought a 1996 Hiace camper but...

The previous owner told me that the hiace included a turbo diesel engine. However I was unable to find any information on the engine model.
Does anyone know where to locate the engine model information?

Yeah when you open the bonnet, so that means lifting the seats, then there is VIN plate on the left side, above the wheel. If you can show us that info then we can help you.

The plate will say something like 1KZ-TE or 2L-T(E)
The rest of the info will give info about the complete drivetrain.

Hi, so yeah this is with the 1KZ-TE engine, the 3 liter turbodiesel but you already knew that.
What else do you want to know?
I didn't see a picture of the vin plate. That would hold some extra info over gearbox and axle and chassis.

I just wanted to know any general maintenance guide. Where I live, there aren't that many JDM mechanics and I am not a mechanic, so any 10 commandments that I should know, it will be greatly appreciated. In addition, I saw some conflicting stories about the reliability of the engine? Thanks.

It is showing the 3.0 turbodiesel with four-wheel drive.
Do you have a 4x4 button/switch on the dashboard? If not, you have permanent all-wheel drive.

I also see the axle saying G295. So that means you got lucky, and you have a limited slip differential (LSD) in the rear axle. It may be worn though.
However, just make sure when chaning the diff oil, to use the type that is meant for visco limited slip differentials. Can just be 75W90 but then the right type for LSDs. You should see a (worn?) sticker on the back of the differential saying 'Use LSD oil only'

If you don't know the history of the car I would recommend a good flush of the coolant system, not just replacing it.
Some people don't have issues with this engine at all, and some have a lot of issues. Mainly cooling issues, which can lead to a cracked head.
If you ever have funny starting problems or it shutting down, look around on this forum as there are some threads about the ECU's. This units sometimes fail and can be repaired by an electronic engineer, as a capacitor inside may have failed.
