PostSubject: FUEL CONSUMPTION ?    FUEL CONSUMPTION ? Icon_minitimeFri Jan 13, 2012 9:17 am

Hi all
This question has most likely been asked before although I haven't been able to find it any where on this forum . According to a U.S based forum they say they get approx 25-28 mpg out of the SC 3.0L 1KZ turbo diesel engines converting to approx 9.5 L per 100 kilometers . Does this ring true to all that own and have tested the fuel economy . I need to know before taking the plunge on a 1998 super custom g 3.0 L turbo diesel .
Thanks in advance .

I managed over 10l per 100 Ks, but only just, far worse when towing though.

I think depends, is it 4wd or 2wd?

the 2wd might be able to manage 9.5L altho i am not sure.

I can consistently manage 10.6L per 100km's in my 4wd SC on the highway. But took alot of "optimization" top get that (pumped up tires, running diesel injector cleaner every service, not overloading the van with weight, driving 90-100km/h)

Then there's hope for me yet, urantia. Smile

I get around 14 L/100km around town driving very sedately. On the highway sitting on 100km/h, the best I've had so far is 11.2L/100km.

What tyres are you running and what pressures are you pumping them up to? I have just put in the first lot of injector cleaner to see if that makes a difference.

I already have taken the middle row of seats out to lighten the load as well as give us space for camping.

Next fuel trial on the highway is next weekend.

There is indeed wernerk!

Im running yokohama geolander HT's. I have 44psi in them (listed
As 51psi max). I wanted to get rid of that tire buldge from the hiace weight.

I hear australian diesel is shocking stuff, and cuasing major issues with those new common rail diesels. So in going to run a bottle of that toyota injector cleaner every 5000km along with an oil change. And hopefully i can maintain my 10.6L/100km economy Smile-

I should add, that even tho i removed all my rear seats. I am loaded to the brim with deep cycle battery, engel fridge, chair/sofabed, cooking gear, food supplies, water supplies, other misc and heavy items. Roof racks witha solar panel reducing aero dynamics abit. So im chuffed with 10.6 in a loaded van Smile-

Also try some of that caltex premium diesel wernerk. Its ment to have a cleaning additive aswell.
I also noticed my van was accelerating up hills where as before it was only maintaining its speed.

I've been using diesel from Mogas/United mainly for economical terms as it's about up to 8 cpl cheaper than BP/Shell/Caltex. Therefore at 60L (refuel light comes on) that's about almost $5 less a tankful, enough for a bottle of injector cleaner.

I still have the rear seats which form the "dining area" as well as the top part of the bed. Behind the driver's seat sits the Engel, then a pull out drawer for non perishables, then the rear seat. I use a collapsable table for eating and the bottom half of the bed. Table still needs to be fully tested for functionality.

Rear seats still in there to take my parents out on day trips.

I'm heading out to Waikerie next weekend where I'll refuel before heading to our destination north from there, so I should get a good indication on fuel consumption on the open highway.

I'm running Hifly 215/70R15 tyres (some Chinese/Korean cheapies) which were brand new when I bought the vehicle. I'm running them at 35psi, maximum listed pressure, 44 psi. I'll have to find out what the max pressure is that I can safely run them at. Once they've worn out, I'll replace them with something more decent.

Thats awesome wernerk. What do you use to charge your second battery? Im using the ctek 250s dual. Highly recomended. I feel a SC camper conversion thread brewing

Yep you should upgrade from those chinese tires. They all seem to have bad grip, wear quick. cant take much pressure etc.

Let us know how your fuel economy goes.

Hi,
I have posted details elsewhere but for what it is worth here again are the first results after the installation of the HHO system
My 2,4td 2wd SC gets me (highway driving) 8,8 KM per ltr.on straight diesel. With the HHO cells engaged it gets me 6,2 KM per ltr.
above all that the power surge is very evident as well as the cleaner exhaust. sunny

Since mid July, I seem to be averaging 13.2 L/100km around town if I refuel once the warning light comes on. This is an improvement on what I was getting originally, around 14.2L/100km.

OK, on to the results of our 4 day trip away.

Hwy travel ca 175km at 95km/h with light to mod NE head-cross wind : 13.2L/100km
Sandy tracks & corrugated roads ca 193km at 40-60km/h : 12.0L/100km
Hwy travel 811km at 98-101 km/h with light to mod N cross, then mainly tail wind : 12.3L/100km
Hwy travel 743km at 98-101 km/h with very strong head-cross wind, then later strong head wind : 13.2L/100km

Overall consumption for 1922km at 244.33L = 12.7L/100km which is reasonable I guess.

Cruise control was used on the highway travel.

Fuel economy not as good as I hoped for Crying or Very sad but it was hampered by the very strong head-cross winds which were a pig to drive in. The non aerodynamic shape of the van was very evident on its handling under these conditions.

I reckon better tyres should enable higher pressures to be used, thus minimising that bulge, which in turn should help to improve fuel consumption.

Judging from your earlier comments re Australian diesel, Urantia, I take it the Perth that you're from is in Scotland, not Western Australia? Smile

An update on fuel consumption for my van.

I've just come back from a 10820km trip to Cairns to view the total solar eclipse.

Total fuel used was 1372L which works out at about 12.7L/100km. This includes highway travel at about 98/100 km/h (depending on whether you look at the speedo or GPS), driving in mountainous terrain up some very steep hills and some city driving, minimal though.

Average for the trip from Adelaide to Innisfail sitting on mainly 98 km/h gave 12.8L/100km
Between Quirindi and Adelaide on the return trip I decided to reduce the speed to about 94km/h or 90km/h with aircon on (only for ca 50km). This gave an average consumption of 11.9L/100km.

Best consumption was 11.4L/100km between Forbes & Hay & worst was 14.4L/100km between Casino & Dorrigo (fair bit of mountain crawling).

The van lost minimal coolant even when pushed up long steep climbs or running for 999km in one hot day (thought we were running behind our schedule, should have looked, duh...).

The only issues we had was with the rear moonroofs not opening (accidental moonroof lock button depressed, thanks Dave) and the car alarm playing up (I ended up disconnecting it).

Having the spotlights was great.

Hi everyone i am yet to add photos as i still have some paint work to do but so far my 4x4 all wheel drive conversion is finished ie: 235/75r15 tyres no mods needed' double bed with storage under bed' cupboard from bed to back of front drivers seat and a house battery 120 amp behind the seat' includes 50 ltr slide out Waeco fridge inside cupboard' led lights at rear and side inside' and led spotlight for side door tent' 60 litre water tank' and i made a stainless steel scoop over air intake' fully loaded and ready for camping before the scoop was attached the best mileage achieved on the highway at 100-110 km was 12.8 per hundred same trip after scoop was fitted 10.6 per hundred i am very happy with that and my next job is to paint the section were the decals down the sides of the van have been removed.
