Subject: What shocks for a 1994 3.0 4wd? Tue May 22, 2018 5:40 pm
Hey guys! I'm just wondering if anybody knows what shocks fit the FRONT of a 1994 3.0 diesel 4wd. I think it's a KZH106? Auto transmission. I've been calling around but no shops can help me, and want me to pull one out so they can match it to something. The problem is, I don't have time to do that and need to do the work in one day. I've tried giving them the codes from toyota DIY.com. No auto supply stores have a listing for the model.
Has anybody changed the front shocks and had this problem before?
Thanks!
Chris

How much research have you done to obtain the exact Toyota part number for this?
Have you talked with a Toyota dealer?

I have the part number, from toyota-diy. Nobody is accepting the part number on their system for aftermarket shocks, and toyota dont want to know about it. Any help from anyone? There must be an equivalent shock for another vehicle that fits.

I'm in Australia by the way. Toyota have no information on their system and I've been told they only can get parts for local models.

Maybe it would help if you told us the part number?
How did you manage to look it up without the exact model number of your van? You'll need to be finding that, it should be in the van somewhere possibly on a plate under the passenger seat near the door opening.

The model is as follows: 1994 TOYOTA HIACE (KZH106W-MRPGT)
The correct part number is there. Both the TEMS and standard. My van has a TEMS button on the dash, but pressing it does nothing and it doesn't light up. Assuming non-TEMS shocks will work fine and bolt up.
I've tried toyota parts but they don't want to know about it and nobody was helpful - flat out told me they don't keep records for the car. Two suspension places didn't have a listing for the car, although for some reason everyone has the KZH100 series (2wd) shocks available (aftermarket)
Anyone seen the shock out before and know what else would fit? my front left has collapsed and I really need to fix this.
Thanks heaps!

This is another site which has your model: jp-carparts.com/toyota/figlist.php?maker=toyota&type=711140&cartype=143
Shocks here jp-carparts.com/toyota/partlist.php?maker=toyota&type=711140&cartype=143&fig=4803
48511-29715 or 48511-29725 RH 48511-29715 or 48511-29725 LH
You can enquire with jp-carparts and ask them: jp-carparts.com/oem/index.php?gid=1&maker=TOYOTA&part_number=48511-29715
Only $45 each so I'd try them first, not sure which country you live in but they may ship.

Hi Chris, Late reply but this will help anyone reading this. I have a 1995 4WD KZH106W. The Monroe shocks that fit are: Front D5473 (Isuzu Bighorn front 92+) Rear D4435 (Toyota Landcruiser front 84-89)
If your van is the standard ride height they'll fit. Btw: even the digital Monroe catalogue here in NZ had the wrong spec. My shock installer had to refer to old physical manuals with measurements.
I can't recommend them highly enough. Transformed the ride and the way the van reacts to speed-bumps and hitting driveways at an angle at low speeds. No more diagonal catapult effect. It's like the whole road has been topped with that firm rubber from kids playgrounds. I still have all the instant road feel but through a controlled cushion. It's almost spooky.

Interesting.
I wonder what shocks would fit the 2WD, the ride could use some modernisation. What physical measurements did he need - just the fully in and fully out lengths and the hole sizes?

Sorry not sure which specific measurements the charts have. I presume all those measurements are applicable but the important ones I've seem on other charts are the type & size of mounting at each end and the static/resting length. That length must be important with of the way the Monroe are variably valved. Christmas morning here. Merry Xmas.

I've wound the torsion bars down on mine and fitted VW T4 gas filled shocks, pretty similar in design, I had to cut down the centre spacer to be flush with the shock eye and it fitted into the Hiace hub fine, then added some cut down poly bushes and job done

Sometimes these part number searches drive me crazy. I'm finding a Toyota part number of 48511-29675. When I pop it into ToyoDIY it tells me it will fit all Hiaces from 1989 to 2004.
But when I search by model I get a different number. 48511-29725.
I've had good luck the first way and 48511-29675 corresponds to KYB 444104.
For €26 I think I might be buying a set of these...

I need new shocks for my 1991 3L selectable 4WD has been lifted by 3". Sorry for the naive question but does that affect what shocks I need? And any suggestions for upgrading the shocks or improving the suspension - going over bumps like sleeping policemen really jars the old girl and I have to go really slow.

main issue: bilsteins catalogue shows the text cut short before listing the exact chassis number and only specifies the 2L engine code, but the associated image and production dates match.

Hello.
In addition to the quoted resources there are several others that I use a lot. Some are listed in this post:
It might help with various parts searches and I realise there’s a lot of geographic considerations, too.
I also know how much of a run around parts numbers can be. Andonic and I have been round the houses over front disks and even once you have a suitable and correct part number, parts availability and cross-referencing to non-OEM numbers can be a real challenge.
For shocks there’s also a huge complication of international shipping. Plenty of sites warn of non-availability so it generally makes sense to shop local where possible.
Also, $276 is just ridiculous. These are the perfect example of a catalogue part. Your local motor factor should have something suitable for ~£50-ish per corner and ~£100-ish if you’re going exotic.
For stock (non-lift and non Tems) there seems a lot of choice as the size and mountings are very common but there may not be a lot of availability.
For the LH119 I think the fronts are: 48511-29595 and the rears are (seemingly): 48531-80401, but I’m less certain on this. I bought a set of these (for the front): https://www.autodoc.co.uk/sachs/1213466
Possibly, when I next have a >£120 order (so free shipping) I may get a set of these for the rear: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/sachs/777990 (standard) or https://www.autodoc.co.uk/sachs/9543796 (possibly longer)
I may not be buying the rears until I’ve got my new rear spring, which will be next year.
Just my 2p!
Cheers!

Hey GPW, I know it’s been a while but wondering if you found good aftermarket shocks for your 2WD. No luck from bilstein but I’m hoping monroe will be suitable. Obviously Hiace isn’t in their system and I’m not sure how to look up if it’s a parts bin share #
