Headlights and yellow foglamps Empty
PostSubject: Headlights and yellow foglamps   Headlights and yellow foglamps Icon_minitimeMon Feb 19, 2007 9:29 pm

I have just had to change a headlight bulb and have had a foglight bulb go so as it took me so long to find someone who could point me in the right direction of how to do this i thought i'd wright it down for others to use.

This is on a 1993 k reg hiace super custom limeted.

First you have to take both the indicators out - this is done by removing the screw on the back of the indicator in the door pillar, removing the black trim and pushing it out from behind.
Then you have to remove both the sidelights - they are held in by one screw behind the indicator that holds the chrome trim that the sidelight is set in to - as far as i can remember you have to push them forwards from behind too.
Now you can get to the screws that hold the top of the grill/front pannel on (on the end of the thin bits that go over the headlights) once youve removed the srews the rest of the grill is held in by a row of about 5 plastic clips along the bottom of the grill so you have just got to pull and hope!
Once the grill is off the headlights are removed with 4 bolts and you can change the bulbs.

The headlight bulbs are standard but the foglight bulbs are weird even toyota said what the hell is that! but you can use a standard H3 foglight bulb you just have to add a wire to the bulb holder to plug in to the negative on the connector

Also i have been told (don't know for sure though) that the yellow fogs on the jap imports are illegal to use in england - so i worked out how to get rid of the yellow bits:
Whylst you have got the headlights out unscrew the fog lamp bulb holder and you can uncrimp the yellow glass dome from the bulb holder using a small flat screwdriver - i think it makes the front end look a bit better with out the yellow stain in the fogs too

Hope this is usefull to someone

Thanks man!

I've been dreading the day I have to replace a headlight bulb. Your description will come in handy when that time comes.

Very Happy Thanks again for this, very useful!
Had this thread up on my laptop in the back while I followed the steps Smile

Wasn't as hard as I thought!
Had an issue with rusty screws (the heads were gone) on the front trim panel (with the badge on it) so levered it up and undid the last of the headlight screw/bolts underneath it Smile

Thanks Wink

Good work! Smile
The original bulbs are available from Toyota...very pricey though compared to aftermarket parts. On the upside most drivers will probably replace a bulb but once....

foglight bulbs are available from ebay for about £9 - search for japanese bulb and they should come up - it's not a search that produces a vast number of results! At least one of the sellers is very careful about describing accurately the bulbs they sell so if you take the old one out it should be fairly easy to identify the right one from the descriptions.

I don't think the yellow fogs are illegal in England - surely the MOT would pick that out?

I've heard that you can get a converter kit to change the foglights to run on a more usual light bulb, but haven't as yet been able to find out where to get these, or whether the guy who told me was just talking rubbish.

Hi guys. Can anyone tell me where the switch is or should be for the (fog?) small halogen lamps between the grille and the headlamps on a '93 model SC?

Thanks! Just replaced both headlight bulbs today, super easy.

Unscrewed from inside the cab, right in the door jamb. Then slip out the side lights, unscrew the headlights (use a flashlight to look behind the assembly for guiding it back in place later), remove the grill --- by the way, the retaining/push on clips that hold the grill in place are the same as used on a mid-90's Ford pickup if you need to replace any of those. Non-marring prybar is super useful for pulling off grill.

Very Happy

Hi

I have a beeping sound before and during the engine is running. Is it because of the battery light alarm in the dash? Does it mean that the battery is not charging?

Hi Guys.

Merlin has done a cracking video (on YT) showing how to take the front apart, but there are variants, of course. Saved me lots of woes so, very grateful, thanks. Check it out before trying to disassemble as it's a bit of a puzzle. Damaged / rusty screw heads are one issue but so might be the pegs fitted to the various components and light assemblies to locate them in place. The screws just do the holding. The pegs do most of the alignment.

Do your best to pry any assembliies out as carefully as possible as these are get brittle and made form unobtainable. The bulbs are very common sizes except for the corner sides (called front clearance lamps), which are P35/5W, at least on my van. The yellow for the fogs is due to a screen in the housing. The bulb is a halogen H3, but it has a Toyota fitting to extennd the prongs into spades for the wiring harness. Part is 90981-13027, see _ttps://www.amayama.com/en/part/toyota/9098113027 , but I'd expect there are other equivalents out there.

I find the lights pretty good at night / rain, but this could also be due to the driving position.

Cheers
