Red button on gearbox ??

On my 2.8 diesel there's a red button on the front of the auto gearbox ?? What's it do as it seems like it does nothing ?? Also should I be driving with the OD button in all the time or not.
Getting used to it now with help from all the replies on here,Thanks.

the red button is to unlock the auto shift selector when you need to push or tow the sc when the engine does not work or you just need to move without the engine
