Hey guys, my transfer case has popped and i have found a potential replacement, but it's for an automatic gearbox and I have a manual, will it fit?

Hello Senditnz and welcome to the forum.

I don’t know, but my guess is that it will. You do need more certainty that this, though!

My best advice would be to first take a look at this post:
https://hiace-super-custom.forumotion.com/t4468-part-numbers

as it has a number of helpful sites to look up. You won’t get the answer to your question there but you might be able to work it out for yourself.

The post suggests heading over to the Electronic Parts Catalogue where you can specify your van and see what parts fit. With the EPC you tend to specify the model first and then find parts for it.

Also, the Amayama site allows you to look at sub-groups of parts and see what fits, or does not. Here you can start big, across all options within a model and then see if the parts are the same for different engines, transmission types or model years. This is probably more helpful and might suggest if there was a change with model years, esp.

The difficulty with all the links in the above post is that some of the parts mentioned there are discontinued and superseded with newer model numbers. This is where a lot of cross-referencing with experts is hard to beat. My local Toyota dealership has been great but you might also need to speak to a gearbox specialist garage. If you’re in NZ then this might be easier than in Dorset, UK.

I also have a manual gearbox (a G52) and a transfer on the rear and my paperwork seems to suggest there is just one transfer box but this doesn’t mean your replacement will fit.

I wonder if you’ve explored getting your transfer box rebuilt? This should be possible if the case isn’t toast and might provide better longevity than an unknown replacement that could be about to blow, likely being as old as the current one. Just a thought and I’d like to know more, both if there really is just a single type and steps you’ve used to determine to replace rather than rebuild as I might face both of these questions one day.

If a recuild is possible I can send you a manaul, but you might need to provide more vehicle details and this will likely be in the New Year.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! I'll have a look on the site now, I've had heaps of trouble finding another replacement and I've been quoted $3.5k to replace with a rebuilt one. I have a 1994 super custom all time 4x4, I've been told that only one other vehicle shares the same transfer case, I think it's the Toyota Dyno I think? Little tipper truck I believe.

Ah.

OK. My van has part-time 4WD.

I expect the transfer boxes on fulltime and part-time variants are different. The part-time ones don’t have any differential to accommodate different turning of the front and rear prop shafts for on-road driving. The part-time ones shouldn’t be driven on sealed roads in 4WD as no centre diff.

I think the fulltime 4WD types must have a centre diff but this is the limit of my knowledge. None of the paperwork I have covers this type. It’s possibly several fulltime Toyota 4WD types use the same transfer and hopefully the sites in the other post will help. I’d also expect there’s plenty of knowledge to come from owners on here with SCs with fulltime 4WD. These are a popular van on here and hopefully someone else can help you better.

There are also plenty of fulltime Hilux and Landcruiser models and 80 series of the latter was the first, I think, to have fulltime 4WD, but also had a centre difflock.

Cheers and good luck and sorry not to be able to help more.

Can’t say for sure but if you look on JP-Carparts diagrams and parts lists, the manual and the automatic vans of the same years and trim versions have the same part numbers for the transfer assembly. I haven’t personally seen a manual transmission with full time 4WD but it would seem the transfer assembly part of the transfer/center-diff is the same for “at least some” of the Supercustoms.
However, just like many parts, note that the Toyota part number changes for different years of the same van model code. This usually doesn’t matter in terms of fit but it sometimes can!

Eg: For my 1995 automatic van (KZH106W-MRPGT) and the manual version of same (KZH106W-MRMGT) the transfer assembly part number is the same: 36100-28220
The next year the Transfer Assembly for both the auto and the manual was 36100-26160; the next year 36100-26161.
They may all be nearly identical, who knows.

The definitive would be to get the part number/code from your transfer box and check it against the one you’re looking at.
