ON THE WAY, THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT £5 EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN.


SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A £1 AND KEPT THE OTHER £2 FOR HIMSELF.


THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID £9 FOR THE ROOM...

WHICH IS A TOTAL OF £27. ADD THE £2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = £29.

WHERE IS THE OTHER POUND?

You have to get the base figure not the result, in effect two separate equations going on that are mixed at the end to confuse.

Simples - somethings you know and somethings you see that changes what you know. Now what has happened is you go off down the £9 a night path, but before you reach conclusion another thing is introduced that changes what you see (or think), then the conclusion that now does not make sense.

Now I'm confused - going for a lie down!

If im honest i thought my head was gonna split.It was 15 minutes of laughing insanely and grinding ones teeth until i had the eureka moment.

That's a good trick, it plays on a + or - error.

Its so easy to make mistakes with by adding when you should be subtracting. The mistake is really obvious when you are multiplying and dividing because the answer is more ridiculous.

on paper it should go like this:

30 - 3 -2 = 25

or
30 - (3+2) = 25

but the story incorrectly tells you, "30 - 3 + 2 = 29 and shouldn't it be 30?"
But no it shouldn't be 30 at all.
