[b]When I purchased my 96 super custom couple of months ago,they fitted 4 new tyes
good quality budget.The car however is all over the place in wind .Its okay in dry still weather but I can hardly hold it on the road when its windy.
Anyone any ideas?

First off, my Hiace is solid in side winds so it is not a design flaw.

The tires need to be LT (light truck) tires with 6 ply side walls or more.

The other thing could be that your shocks are worn out or not stiff enough.

What pressure you running the tyres at.....

I have had everything double checked so it must be tyres.
Interesting that you run on light truck ,because garage said not to run on van tyres?
Tyre company said it may be tread pattern as I have tyres marked M&S,Mud and snow?
I have tried all pressues,some are better than others.am running on 42 all round.

205/70/15 is stock and what I'm running at a bit lower pressure than you.
I'd suggest going w/ a stiffer sidewall and your handling should improve.

Checked "bessie" and she has S+M shoes (OOH MATRON)

Time for a change then, mine are running at 45 front 48 back as usually have boot full with tools....

I still have the tyre presure sticker on my hiace and they are supposed to be at 2.5 Kpa which is a touch under 2.5 bar or 25 Psi front and back.
not sure where everyone is getting the high 40s tyre presures from ?

I've done some searching and 2 different sites show 45psi for a camper model.

The manual ( ) from ebay helpully says " refer to your owners handbook"..

Mine started wearing the outside edges at anything under 35 psi...

Yeah in Aus we have to put LT rated tyres on em for insurance reasons, in regards to tyre pressure though it up to you to look at the recommendations that the tyre manufacture sets on the side of the tyre - usually 35 - 45psi is the normal - the size is usually set by the vehical manufacture ie - 205/70/15 or what ever fits in on the rim and in the wheel arch.

I got new tyres for my 4x4 SC a few months ago - they are sensational!!!!
Dean tyres Wild Cats AT 225/70/15 The 235 were too big for the front. Highly recommend these tyres for the 4x4 SC out there, ive taken them through soft sand - slippery mud & rock you name it - they dont disapoint oh and super quite and smooth on the highway.

Just noticed moogdrews pressure conversion and I disagree. 2.5 bar is around 36psi. I go a bit higher when I'm camping.

I've noticed lots of you seem to have 205/70x15. Mine are 195x15 on my 4wd, so next tyre change I might go up a size. I think the 205s are a more common (cheaper?) size anyway.

Yeah go the wider tyres man - the 205's are whats recommended for our bus's - that's what i had on mine originaly - but since i put the 225 on i wouldnt look back - more stable at high speed and way better off road all round - just dont go all budget when purchasing tyres, not worth it in the end unless your selling the vehicle.

My tyres are 195/14 - on the original alloys! I run 'em at 42 all round - seems ok....
If you fit bigger/smaller(!) rims & tyres, doesn't it muck up your speedo and mpg calculations?

Yes it does but only if you change the overal diemeter of the wheel that ditermins your gearing not the width of your tread - You have 14 inch rims with the 195mm wide tyres - so depending on the width of your rim's? - 195 wide rubber could be as wide as you can go, you need to know how wide your rim's are... this is usually stamped on the inside of the rim in inches ie..14x6 this will determine your max tyre size for that rim. My rims are 15x6 but i still could have the same overal tyre diemeter as you, just means my tyres have a lower profile - ie 70mm rather than 75mm - that being the mesurement from the rim to the outside of the tyre tread. Hope i got this right and makes sense?

70 vs 75 series is a percentage of the width not a millimetre measurement.

A 195/70-15 will have a sidewall height of 70% of 195mm(width) = 136.5mm

A 195/75-15 will have a sidewall height of 75% of 195mm (width) = 146.25mm

A 205/70-15 will have a sidewall height of 70% of 205 = 143.5mm

A 205/75-15 will have a sidewall height of 75% of 205 = 153.75mm.

You can see how a 195/75-15 has almost exactly the same diameter as a 205-70. Give or take 3mm or about an eight of an inch for you metrically challenged folks.

These tires are about as tall as you can possibly go without any modifications other than tightening the torsion bars.

Smooth ride. My speedo is about 10% too slow.

just to put me oar in mine is running 215/55/16 at 38 p.s.i .when i first got it it had all makes of tyre on it and was all over the place in wind on the motorway.all tyres replaced for m.o.t (cheapos) still all over.replaced again two m.o.t`s later with 4 kumhos reinforced sidewall sport profile still all over .these started to split across the tyre 12months in and were replaced with 4 michellin reinforced sports profile type.it still was all over in the wind.4 new shocks later and she is rigid in the wind . think she`s had more rubber than a lady of the night with a particularly capacious sausage wallet

AHH Yeah that makes better sense of it - yes i had it totaly mixed up thanks for clearing it up for me want33s - you learn something everyday ay!

So do you mean by tightening the tortion bar you are just raising the height? If so how much did it have to go to fit the 235's - what is your measurement from the ground to the edge of the gards? - i measured mine and its 790mm.

i tried a set of wheels of a 89 4 runner on mine one day for a try , cant remember the size but the diameter was about 30mm bigger, just fitted in the wheel arch and just missed the arch on lock.
The van cruised nicley and still had the grunt on the take of.
only problem was the torque converter locked up at about 90kph instead of 80
and around the city the auto seemed to be slipping but was ok in overdrive off.

I thought standard 235/75/15 tyres were better

Strange - would have thought yours was alot higher than that. was that mesurement taken on level ground?
