Dumb heater question

Hi,

Even though I have a later version of the SC, the heater controls look the same as this:

After driving in the dark, I realise that even though there are green bulbs and the LCD panel lights up, I couldn't make out the text. Is the text supposed to be 'lit' when the lights are on and mine are faulty - or is it a matter of learning where the buttons are when it's dark?
