Subject: CC pop-top skylight seal needed Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:01 pm
Hello everyone.
After nearly 30 years of UV light etc the skylight on my 4x4 CC needs replacing.
Here are some pictures of the top and bottom of the seal and the writing that's acid-etched onto the glass itself.
Top view (forwards is up). You can see where the two aluminium hinges have created depressions on the seal in the this picture
View from underneath (also forwards is up)
Writing etched on the glass
The glass measures 4mm thick and is 360mm x 400mm and the seal can be removed from the glass white in situ, (but you do have to remove the grill and wind-open mechanism.
I rang Toyota and thay gave me a part number but this was 63257-95J02, which is for a full-width, oblong skylight, rather than the square-type fitted to my van, and presumably also the factory-fitted poptop CC (the LH119V-RRMES, which mine is).
I'd be very grateful if anyone can advise if there is a Toyota or Temperlite seal, or whether folks have bought from https://www.themetalhouse.co.uk/, or equivalent? If so please can you supply a link?
VMT
Cheers

Hello.
When I spoke to my local Toyota dealership and the only seemingly equivalent part they had was for a full-width oblong skylight I didn’t take it further as it was obviously not correct for me. I think it was a part the dealership could get, but it’ll also be available from the usual Japanese / UAE warehouses.
The skylight (glass) and seals in the above post are on the pop-top outer roof part of my van and it’s very likely that these came from a completely different supplier(s) associated with the camper fit out, possibly via TRD. I’ve not found a suitable seal yet as I’ve not dug into the Toyota Temperlite Asahi connections; the websites I’ve dipped into are rather impenetrable and my focus has been on bodywork and mechanical bits.
I don’t have any ‘typical’ Hiace sunroofs so can’t be much help. The EPC does comprehensively describe these (I think) but I’ve never needed to look in more detail. I expect they are somewhat similar to the ones that Timmy the Toolman (on YT) has worked on. Probably worth a look.
Sorry I can’t help more.
Cheers!

Just a thought. Is there a local campervan conversion/repair company near you (VW-specialising probably)? They may be able to help identify the manufacturer as the vans are of similar age. Or they may be able to suggest an alternative?

I would take it to a local glass shop..& get 1 cut to shape. As for the seal, i would try using just a universal seal & a little more sealant to fill any gaps. The glass shop may even offer something aswell. Even a custom sunroof business..

Hello.
To avoid any confusion I’ll just add there’s no issue with the glass in mine and the hinges and rest of the mechanism are all good.
I’m trying to find a replacement seal, hopefully by using the numbers and manufacturer’s details on the glass. Apols if I didn’t make that clear.
All the hardware is also fine, but a bit crusty and I’m reluctant to remove the glass or hinges or modify these for fear of damage to anything. The hinges, by the way are aluminium and I will be etch-priming these before painting them with a modified epoxy paint. I think they were originally either plastic dipped or powder coated.
If I had to replace the skylight glass itself I’d not be likely to put glass back in. The original is automotive tempered glass so both very strong and if it was to break would do so safely into tiny pieces. I’m absolutely no glass expert but I doubt a piece of 4mm cut glass, such as is used in windows etc would be suitable. Firstly, ‘window’ glass tends to break into jagged shards and not being tempered this could be dangerous overhead or might fail unexpectedly. Secondly I think it would be difficult to cut the continuous curve of the shape itself, and also the through-bolt fixing would be tricky, but again maybe my glass-cutting is old skool. If I had to replace the glass I’d use acrylic (for ease) or polycarbonate or something similar
Anyway I’m only looking for a seal. I’ve now found the Toyota subsidiary that built the CCs in Japan, but not found a point of contact.
My fall back is to use 'themetalhouse' as in the earlier post, or as g00se suggested a conversion company here might have something suitable. There are loads of these in the wider area, but they generally know nothing about Toyotas. Both they and themetalhouse might be able to identify the seal based on its profile shape but I expect any non-genuine seal won’t be a continuous piece, just something that needs to be joined.
The original seal was not glued in nor bonded in, in any way. It just sits there and works. This is another strong reason for looking for the original, if possible.
Cheers!

Mine started leaking after 25 years. I replaced it with a length of door seal which fitted well. Keep the join at the end which is highest when vent is open. Not leaked since then.
