Juddering engine after fuel filter change. Empty
PostSubject: Juddering engine after fuel filter change.   Juddering engine after fuel filter change. Icon_minitimeFri May 07, 2021 3:02 pm

Hi Guys. Just changed the fuel filter on my 1990 model 3L (2.8 litre diesel) engine Hiace.
Thought it would be a simple enough job.
To make life easy (?) I removed both the fuel lines to the filter bracket.
Filled the new filter with clean fuel then attached the inlet fuel line back on the bracket.
Operated the prime plunger a couple of times to ensure fuel coming out.
Went for a test drive and at low revs the engine is really juddering and cut out a couple
of times. it also takes a second or two to start whereas it used to be instant.
I'm guessing (hoping!) its just air in the system but any advice on how I might bleed it?

The new filter is a Bosch N4438 whereas the old one was a Boshi BFC-2001.

The new filter is about 10mm shorter than the old one but all threads and O rings the same.

cheers

Mike

Hi,
To bleed the fuel system simply crack open the nut sealing fuel line to injector. Not to much, just enought to let the air escape out. Once you see steady flow of fuel, tighten down the nut, so no more diesel seeps out. You can try with running engine. Just do one cylinder at the time.

Thanks Imants.

I will do that. I'm also going to change the hose clips on the filter hoses from 30 year old, tired spring clips to worm drive, Jubilee clips in case my disturbing the hoses has caused air to bleed in to the system.
cheers

Just as a final note on this,
I changed the hose clips on the fuel filter.
Engine ran better but still a little bit juddery and not as quick to start as usual.
I had a closer look and found that the water drain tap on the bottom of the fuel filter was weeping fuel slightly despite being fully closed.
Presumably also letting in air when the injector pump starts sucking.
So I unscrewed the whole assembly from the bottom of the fuel filter.
Completely unscrewed the drain tap and replaced the O ring on it.
Reassembled and all seem well now Smile

It is possible that the pump was old, and by operating it, you caused a slight air leak. Have a pump and check very carefully around the bit you push, for any diesel seeping out.

Oh - Ok, I see you have the solution!

The tank has no lift pump, so any disturbance to the vacuum sucking the fuel, causes issues!
