PostSubject: Roof Racks   Roof Racks Icon_minitimeSun Oct 18, 2020 2:37 am

Greetings all,
I am looking for roof racks for my 98 SC 4x4 in Australia, any recommendations? I have an awning I want to attach and later on a solar panel. The guy I spoke to at Autobarn said most roof racks would interfere with side door opening as it doesn't slide straight??
Ive only had my van for 3 months...loving it! When I see another one on the road (and they seem to be multiplying!) I call out "Yo Super Custom!" and give the peace sign ✌
I'm a Happy Camper now 🤗

That guy was telling you nonsense. This shape Hiace van has been used by tradesmen for 40 odd years over half the globe with all manner of roof-racks. There’s nothing special about the SC door slide mechanism. I’ve found the Rhino Racks are superb. They have high rise brackets that suit the higher SC roofline with or without moonroofs. My triple moonroof model fits 3 bars without interfering with the roof operation or covering them and gives 2.55m of dead flat rackage. See my profile pic.

The Rhino brackets are a plastic composite with stainless allen head bolts so no rust issues. I’ve had them on for 10+ years now with no apparent UV degradation. The bars are aluminium and I think the load in my profile pic was about 300kg.

Mine has Thule racks. Yes they are just another 100 series Hiace when it comes to roof racks (and windscreens)

Watch out in underground car parks!

Thanks for that info. I thought the guy at Autobarn was just making it look too hard...Unfortunately now I have another more urgent issue...I shattered my rear window today 😱 🥺 😩 Has anybody had to replace one of these?

Whoops As it happens I have! I was carrying a scooter and it rolled forward off the center stand when I braked, was still standing nicely strapped either side and when I pulled away from the lights it rolled back shattering the window with the rear carrier. I thought I’d been rear ended.
Picked up a used one from a wrecker. The key is to find one with the same tint code - either bronze or green tint. Putting it in is a bitch. The wrecker got one of his guys to help for $20. They used a piece of nylon rope to pull the rubber seal into place while I pressed onto it. Physical job.

I'm still trying to source a new or second hand rear window for my 98 SC. Does anyone know of one wrecking in Australia?

It’s a standard Hiace window.
