| Hello, I have managed to put the wrong fuel again into my beloved Super Custom. I have no recollection of putting petrol in but I know it was only a top up and not a full tank. Unfortunately this time I drove the vehicle not realising. After one trip it wouldn’t stay running and immediately cut out, blowing a lot of grey smoke. I have had the engine flushed, the fuel filter replaced and it only runs for about 10-15 minutes (about the time it takes to warm up)before cutting out and then does not stay running. The garage aren’t sure what it is and the don’t have the right diagnostic kit to work it out. Anyone have any ideas or know a good place in or near Birmingham to take it? It’s a 1994 3lt turbo diesel 4x4 EFI, vin KZH106-1007174. Any help would be much appreciated!! Many thank. | |

| If it only stays running until it warms up try (on a cold engine) pumping the primer pump (on top of the fuel filter) and watch for leaks.
Also (assuming there are no leaks) you may want to bleed the new fuel filter - take the pipe off that goes to the injector and pump a bit until only diesel comes out.

| Hello again, The garage have do what you have suggested but the van still cuts out after around 15-20 minutes (once warn) and does not start again until cold. The garage is wondering if there could be something to do with the electrics that maybe coursing this? Any help is really appreciated. Many thanks, Craig | |

| Did it ever give difficulty starting or cut out when warm at all before the fuel mixup? Did the garage confirm you had added petrol at all - did they find any there or smell it when they flushed the system?
It's a bit of coincidence if the electrics go wrong just at this time so I'm wondering if you wrongly blamed a fuel issue for something else.
Petrol in the injector pump would prevent lubrication but I don't see why it wouldn't have been flushed out and I don't see why it would only fail when it's warm - what are the symptoms? Does it gradually cut out or just get slower and slower?
Does it start well?
When it's stopped listen open the 'bonnet' and listen to the injector pump (toward the back where the pipes come out) and listen - is there a ticking sound coming from it?

| Hello, Before the fuel mix up it did not have difficulty starting or cut out when warm. Just spoke to the garage, they said, everything has been flushed through, the vehicle starts up fine initially for about 20 mins and its stops like its been switched off, it does not peter out. There is a ticking noise from the pump. I hope this helps with the enquiry? Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. Thank you for the Speedy responses!

| The 20 minutes run and pump ticking sounds similar to a case where the ECU needed new capacitors, I'm don't know if that one stopped abruptly or petered out though.
It could be that the ECU switches to an entirely different 'warm' program and your capacitors in the ECU have failed (perhaps any extra shaking from the engine mis-fuel was the last straw for a corroded leg in there) - so you get an abrupt halt.
If it runs perfectly well before that time then I'd be tempted to take out the ECU, very carefully open it up and with a bright light and a mirror look very carefully at the legs of the capacitors - especially C106 and the ones next to it (that live on the main board but are obscured by the small board. If you see any green colour on any capacitor leg or any sign of leakage they'll need replacing. Your 1994 date is a prime candidate for failure of those.
You could always bring the ECU down here (Cambridge) if you want a 2nd opinion. It lives in the passenger door pillar BTW.

| Hello, the garage have taken out the ECU but don’t know how to fix it or where to send it. Is this something you deal with? Would it be possible to send it to you somehow? Postage and costs covered by myself. Many thanks | |

| Hello, the garage had a good look at the ECU and couldn’t see any issues with it. They suggested taking the van to be diagnosed so it’s at another garage now and it’s been suggested it the fuel pump solenoids. He mentioned a brown and maybe a black one? The model is Y-KZH106G-JRMET, engine is a 1KZ-TE. The garage hasn’t given me the part number for the pump as yet. Would anyone know the part number for the fuel pump or what solenoids to get please? | |
