Radio/ICE Empty

So, I'm discovering that Toyota standard speakers are a little 'quaint' (i.e. tricky to upgrade due to space constraints), and also finding out that the front dash facia has a 175mm x 95mm aperture for the double DIN stereo fitment.

I just pulled out a more modern (CD+cassette!) Toyota double DIN head unit which was wedged in there, with the 200mm x 98mm standard Toyota facia that obviously didn't quite fit.

So for around £3 i can buy a lead adapter to connect the Toyota plugs into a standard DIN, but even a standard 200mm wide facia will never fit into the panel. However it doesn't have to, because the design is such that the facia sits just in front of stuff like the heater controls etc, so I just need to make sure the new radio is the correct depth before I pop the dash facia on again.

So the question is - how did everyone else fit a new radio and/or speakers, and did you go for double DIN (expensive!) or an adapter and single DIN?

Also did anyone put an 8" sub to the left of the drivers side bay? The centre console there has space (good), but it's not sealed very well (bad).
