PostSubject: 93 SCL Radiator    93 SCL Radiator Icon_minitimeSat Feb 03, 2024 2:16 am

Hello all. First time poster here. This forum has been an amazing source of info, and I've only gotten this far because of it, so thank you to everyone!

Down to business.

Location = North America
1993 Super Custom Limited Hiace = KZH106W-MFPQT

I'm looking for information on the radiator. OEM part number is 16400-65070 but is out of production. Alternate part number (that is available) is 16400-67161, but I'm not sure if that newer radiator will fit my earlier production hiace. Any advice (or leads on appropriate parts) here would be greatly appreciated. I'm also curious if the radiator from any models of Hilux or Prada... Or any other option from the 1KZ family would work.

Additionally, I'm trying to determine if the original OEM radiator can be recored. I've seen a few postings here referencing people recoring theirs, but I can't find definitive information on the material the OEM radiator is made of to determine if it's possible.

Please chime in with any tips or ancient wisdom.
Thanks all!

Hello ‘the_yeti77’ and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you know your onions.

I’ve had both my radiator and front heater matrix re-cored. I also had the main radiator two-layer core replaced with a three-layer core. You can read all about it in the longish post I wrote in my Show Us Yours section. It’s within the long post on the cooling and appears on the first page, but below the section on the rear brakes.

I’ve never seen a plastic and aluminium radiator re-cored, but it’s not a problem with the older types. You just need to find the right sort of place who can do the work. Old-style radiators are ‘just’ soldered together. In theory the plastic and aluminium ones can have the cores replaced as the tabs are bent back, the core ad its O rings replaced then everything re-sealed.

My post explains that I couldn’t be sure about the aftermarket options and didn’t want to get an aftermarket aluminium radiator, but that’s another option. If you go down this route please do post your experiences as it would be great to know.

There’s also a thread on here where someone has fitted the OEM radiator from a LandRover Defender without too much difficulty. This should be searchable if you fancy going down that route.

I didn’t check the number of the radiator you posted but the Hiace’s cooling system is variously complicated with some having the additional flat radiator (particularly autos, which I think you have), where some vans just have the upright one. Autos also have the in radiator auto cooling loop. The LR equivalent had this, I think. Going ‘different’ might make the fittings more bespoke, but that’s just another piece of the puzzle.

You might find the longish first post on my ‘Show us Yours’ section that has various links and resources useful. You likely know all this, but it might have something new to you?

HTH!!

This post is the one mentioning the LR:

Hi - just did a check out of curiosity and there seems to be a number of radiators that will replace the 16400-65070. I did a search on a UK site, and there seems to be a few:

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/1640065070

My guess is that the same may be available in the US. If you open the first one:

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/nrf/2390351

if you scroll down to the compatibility section, there are a few Toyota OE numbers that are compatible - so it may be worth searching on these locally too?

Hey guys, thanks so much for those responses. Some updates here as I've researched what you guys suggested - and an update from the shop working on my Hiace.

First, and for anyone perusing later:
My 1993 SCL Hiace has the original OEM top and bottom radiators installed. Which, to my absolute joy, it turns out are made of brass and CAN be recored. I've been back and forth with the shop telling me that the radiators were too new to do that. In the US, this is mostly true, but it seems Toyota Japan didn't switch to plastic/aluminum rads in the Hiace until post facelift around 1995/96. So, to anyone in the US with a leaky radiator from a similar year, just have a human from your shop actually look at your radiator to determine if its brass... and not aluminum as they'll assume.

Part Numbers and Radiators and Tears, Oh My.
OEM part number 16400-65070 is out of production. I inquired to:

https://shop.thepartsman.com.au
https://www.amayama.com/en
https://www.vanlifenorthwest.com/

and several others I can't remember trying to find information on the compatibility of part number 16400-67161 with 16400-67050, but no one could tell me anything definitive, except that they didn't have it. Vanlifenorthwest never responded at all. Harumph.

The autodoc website listed above is a wonderful reference tool, but doesn't ship to the US. BUT, the new NRF part number let me to a couple different sites, and ultimately an answer!

https://www.trodo.com/radiator-engine-cooling-nrf-52091

Putting in my Hiace model specifics the site then tells me that that radiator doesn't fit my vehicle... but they have it listed as one of the cross referenced part numbers. So I continued searching.

https://silverdaleradiators.co.nz/collections/radiators/products/toyota-hiace-super-custom-diesel-auto-1991-1996-radiator-new?variant=39950980219051

https://silverdaleradiators.co.nz/collections/radiators/hiace

Boom. Finally, an experienced, documented reference.
"Will ONLY fit 1991~1996 Pre facelift Models that have Original Copper / Brass. If your Original Radiator is Plastic / Aluminium this radiator will NOT fit for that Model Please see our listing with part number"

As you can see from their stock, the one that would fit my Hiace is, as of this posting, sold out. But, you can also clearly see the difference in connection locations, sizes, and materials of the different models for the different Hiace years. This has led me to believe that the part number 16400-67161 will not fit for earlier model Hiaces. That radiator would have been plastic/aluminum and the connections would be in different places, making a fitment very difficult. Additionally, it's important to know that the OEM radiators in the earlier Hiaces also had auto transmission coolers in them. SO - if you're fitting an aftermarket radiator or one from a Hilux or Land Cruiser etc. Those radiators won't have the auto cooler and you'll have to fit an aftermarket one in addition to the rad.

Thankfully, my search is over and I'll have my original brass radiator (with 38 leaks and counting) recored back to happy functionality. Hopefully this post helps someone else in the future. Smile
