I blew up my 1996 Hiace 4x4 Auto 2.8D 3L engine in spectacular fashion.

It is likely the head gasket, but could equally be a cracked block.
I could repair the gasket. but I risk doing that immense task only to find the block is cracked.
Also if is repaired, then I get an underpowered fuel gobbler back.
So I'd rather replace it with a more efficient engine.

Which engines would fit into the Hiace that would give me more power and use less fuel?

Spectacular Fashion!? Come on, tell us more of the story!
I remember someone fitted a Renault 2.0 litre turbo, but I forget where I read that post.. 🚐💨🍃

If it’s a 4x4 my understanding is that Toyota’s 1UZ-FE V8 fits right in relatively easily. From memory the 4WD 1KZ-FE models share the same engine mounts with the Japanese Hiace Ambulances that come with the V8. Not sure about the 3L.
Quad cam 4.0L V8 may be a little thirstier than other options but are insanely reliable and power won’t be a problem.
I’ve seen a number of V8 Hiace conversions here in NZ and they sound gorgeous. Quite a bit of info out there and YT videos including one spinning all 4 wheels on sealed road.

My thoughts exactly.

I must pick your brains on your turbo set up.
