Hello CherrySloth.
Sounds a worrying problem that you’re no doubt keen to fix.
You don’t say how much side-to side play there is in the steering wheel but there really should be none.
As a guess I’d guess that the bolts that hold the steering column shaft to the cross-member (within the dash) are loose. If there’s a lot of play the bolts that hold the steering column to the van’s floor might also be loose but start with the set of four that are higher up and connect to the cross-member.
Take a look at this post:
https://hiace-super-custom.forumotion.com/t4468-part-numberswhich will show you a few hugely useful online resources, particularly a link to the
Electronic Parts Catalogue (
EPC). There’s a link to the EPC on that page then you need to tailor the EPC based on your van’s details that are on the build plate (under the passenger seat).
On the EPC the ‘steering column and shaft’ is within the ‘Transmission and chassis’ section. There’s also a ‘Steering wheel’ section but the column section also contains the tilt mechanism. It’s possible that something has just got bound up or gummed up in there.
Viewing and accessing the cross-member bolts will probably require removing some of the dash panels; I can’t quite remember, but guess what the dash and panels are covered in their own section.
Good luck!
