black smoke help

toyota hiace super custom. 1993 black smoke coming from tail pipe also rattel coming from engine. not got a clue about van not had it long.hope some one can help. thanks

Could be a mixture issue, check the air filter out, if its not been changed in ages it will be running rich, hence the black smoke, i'd check teh induction system first.............

Petrol or diesel?

Black smoke means either excess fuel or lack of air. Check:

Air filter/blockage in intake system
injectors for fault - leaking injectors can cause knocking when they are worn - a diesel specialist will be able to test injectors for dribble and poor seating
