PostSubject: Black smoke, misfire, and lost in Canada !   Black smoke, misfire, and lost in Canada ! Icon_minitimeSat Aug 03, 2013 12:10 am

Hi guys,

again, having issues with my cruising cabin Sad We managed to ship it to Canada from France, and are now heading to Vancouver. But, since 2 days, we have the following problem :
- the engine doesn't idle very well, I also need to pump a bit on the throttle to start the engine
- black smoke appears behind, misfires, rattle, looks like I'm running on fumes.
Engine may run fine for 20 min, but then it comes back, and in one case, I lose the engine while slowing down in a curve (loss of power steering and brakes, scary one....)

if I release the throttle, it's getting worse, and when I fully press it, it's back to normal (almost)
seems totally random, it appears early in the morning with the engine cold, or late in the evening.
Also, it seems to help if I use the fuel pump, at least for the first few miles.
On a side note, it seems there are 2 leaks on the exhaust, below the engine. Could that be the main reason ?

Any help welcome guys, we are stuck in Thunder bay, Ontario for a long weekend Sad
cheers,

David

To follow on this, we finally get someone to have a look at our van. There were 2 leaks in a bandage on the exhaust (below the engine, between the bend and the main line).
The mechanic did a new one and it was much better ! More power, no smoke, no misfire, and even more MPG.
We took the road again, but after 400 kms, it started again. First thing is, when I leave the motorway to stop on a rest area (only using engine brake) , the engine will stall after complete stop. (box in direct position, seems to help if I switch to neutral)
I still need to pump on the throttle to start it.

No, I'm thinking about fuel starvation, or air in the fuel pipe. When I open the cap to fill the tank, there is a suction noise, so I guess it's not taking air from here.
Back to the fuel pump, there is always air in the system for some reason. When I pump to release it, there is a fuel leak at some point (when there is too much pressure).
Is that normal ?? Or is it suppose to handle whatever the pressure you put on the pump ?
At the bottom of the fuel pump, there is a white piece with 2 cables, if I pump to release the air and then stop, I clearly hear air suction. My guess is the vehicle has been serviced 1 month ago, the fuel filter was replaced, so maybe not properly sealed.

What do you think ?
cheers,

David

Tighten the fuel filter, there should be no air noise. When you pump it it should go rock hard - no leak of air or fuel.
Pumping the throttle will have no effect, all it is is a butterfly valve, does not squirt any fuel in.

Fuel starvation maybe, check filter may have had a tankful of dirty fuel.

Failing that go to a diesel specialist and have them take a look.

Hi Clive, thanks for your reply !
I went to a few places near Winnipeg in Canada, and no one gave us a hand on this. We need a special tool to tighten the bottom of the fuel filter !
Anyway, I managed to remove it without any damage, but took me a long time. I put the o ring seal properly, then did my best to tighten it. Everything's back to normal now, but as I don't have the proper key, I still need to find it to tighten it correctly :p
Will hunt for a toyota dealer with friendly mechanics in Vancouver !

cheers

I use adjustable plumber pliers. Filter fitted to many Japanese vehicles should not be a problem to any mechanic!

Looks like in central Canada, if you don't pay for the service, they won't even have a look at your issue. A bit disappointed there, mechanics were more friendly in Ontario and Quebec.
Anyway, I'll try my chance to another toyota this morning, failing that, I'll go to the next hardware shop, thanks for the tip.
