| Hi guys
I have a question about the 2.8 diesel engine / 3L.
1 - The adjustment of a valve does it affect the power and fuel consumption on the engine ?

| If a valve opens too little yes it does. If it opens too much or not close at all yes it does. BUT you would have other symptoms such as smoke, noise, bad starting and poor tick over. | |

| So if the engine has a good sound and power and no excessive smokea it is a good sign, even if it as 133000Km that does not mean it needs a valve adjustment.
Thank you for the information.

| I'm fairly certain the valves adjust themselves. Most vehicles newer than about 1980 don't need to have the valves adjusted.
at 133,000 km, that engine is barely broken in.

| I think they are manually adjusted via shim selection on the 2.8. If there are no probs and the vehicle has had regualr oil changes etc. I'd leave alone. Maybe the only time worth checking would be if the head was removed for some reason. I assume self adjusting would be of the hydraulic variety. | |

| 133,000 Km is not much for a decent diesel engine really. They should do 500,000 with good maintenance and considerate use I would think.
Ours will tick over 100,000 this week. Have to get the timing belt done and the thermostat. I don't think it really needs anything especially serious done to it. Still sounds and goes good, no smoke unless it's driven very hard.
