Subject: Missing vf & te1/te2 on diagnostic port Sat May 18, 2024 4:42 am
I’ve been trying to diagnose a initimittant power loss issue on my 1999 super custom automatic 1kzte model (Kzh100-0039994)
No one has been able to read the 22 pin odb1 diagnostic port, I bought a odb1 read tool from zf devices which needs an active B+, E1, TE2 and VF port however my diagnostic port has no wire running for vf or te2 ( opened back of diagnostic port to confirm this)
There is an ODB2 port under the steering column so not sure if i'd be able to find the TE2 and VF wires there?
Otherwise I could try connecting directly to the ECU, but there is no way of me reading which what connects to which pin.
I've tried scouring the internet to find a wiring diagram for this ECU but not having any luck.
Anyone else encountered this problem or has any leads on how I can find these wires or an ECU wiring diagram

Hi - that's a pain!
If you go to the hiace south east website and download the engine manual for the 1KZ-TE, The ECU pinouts are on page 99.

Just noticed there's no TE2 on the pinout, but there is on page 137 (DI-53)
There's also some failsave mode details on page 91.

Yeah it is a pain!
Thanks for the info, yeah I can’t seem to find that te2,which is needed to short or see the diagnostic, also interesting that my ecu has 4 plugs coming out of it where most 1kzte ecu pinouts only have 3
I did find an odb2 port under the steering column and this diagram on how they link up so maybe there is a te2 there I can tap into or try to short out, but not read anywhere of anyone going that online

Hi intermittent power loss can be result of many things from a blocked filter to a broken wire or bad sensor , diagnostics will not always detect things like a bad breather on the fuel tank or blocked fuel pickup, these old buses were not so sophisticated as modern ones , you will still have to do the basics of testing things like fuel flow ,turbo boost etc we have been through all these and never touched the OBD port or had any lights flashing on the dash ( I am 76 and very old school).

For complication - the physical OBD2 port is called a DLC3. I found this reference to it in a 1KZ-TE supplemental manual that refers to ECUs with 4 plugs like yours . It's referring to either a 4 Runner or Hilux or Land Cruser - so it's still not clear which one you have:
However, this page: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1101762/Toyota-1kz-Te.html?page=3#manual
refers to MOBD rather than OBD1 - so it may be that you' have something different from the rest - using a different protocol? Very sorry, I know I recommended the OBD1READ device but it may be that the reader you have won't work. Hopefully, MOBD readers are easier to come by. There's a good second hard market for the reader you have, so hopefully you won't be out of pocket.

Ah thanks for your comment Jt69 you are right, I may need to get a mechanic/ auto elec to go through and do all the those basic tests, I work in IT normally so all this can stuff is a bit out of my depth
G00se ahh that is very interesting, I've found a forum post talking about being able to read MODB 1kzte engines using torque android app and one of those cheap elm 327 odbII dongles so I may check that out
Ah no worries about the ODB1Read device, It'll be easy to re-sell down the track, really appreciate time and effort you put in to looking up different manuals and sharing your knowledge
I'll post to the prado Modb reader here in case anyone else in future is in the search https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/-120-series-discussion-only/general-120-series/27742-installing-obd2-bluetooth-scanner-on-m-obd-prados

I went down that pathway like you...and then I discovered successfully Techstream and J2534 cables...do that with the knowledge that you may not find a fault code at all....but you might find data that could be useful.
You have checked for leaking capacitors in the ECU?

Ah interesting How do you get access to a techstream and J2534 cables? heard techstreams are quite expensive! Guessing toyota dealers may have them. See you are based on sunny coast, I was based up there for a while trying to sort some of my issues but had no luck.
Ya data could be useful, I'm at a point now where I'd like to get some kind of data to know where to look.
