Trouble starting warm. Empty
PostSubject: Trouble starting warm.   Trouble starting warm. Icon_minitimeFri Jul 16, 2021 4:41 am

Hello! I just got my import last week, a 1992 Toyota Hiace 3L Turbo. Really looking forward to building this out! She runs OK, but over the past three days has had trouble starting when already warm. If she has settled and cooled down she seems to start ok again, but if warm it's a real member of parliament of a job getting her started I need to pump the gas and keep the starter going. She revs and clicks but doesn't turn over and enter idle. Any leads or ideas are appreciated!

It sounds like she has some issues with her fuel. The start up pressure is much higher than idle pressure ( even more so when an engine is warm) so you may have a fuel pump issue ( not enough pressure), a leak in the fuel line, collapsing fuel lines, or worn injector seals. The heat causes expansion in all fuel areas and "opens" up the problem which is why when it has cooled and "closed" the issue she starts up fine.

- check under and see if there is any wet spots or indication of leaks
- look in the engine for any obvious fuel spray- inspect each injector carefully
- when warm look for any collapsed lines.
- fuel filter- when was the last time she got a new filter? check and make sure it is seated/threaded correctly and replace when needed.

hope this helps-

Does pumping by hand the manual primer pump atop the filter, make any difference to starting?
You may have an air leak in the fuel lines, filter, etc.

Fuel filter is the #1 first thing to swap out when having problems, especially true when down on power/top speed..

Check/drain the filter for water and diesel bug.

There could be restriction in the tank strainer. Some also have a tiny strainer under the inlet banjo of the injector pump.

Hoping you find a simple solution, good luck.
