Hi everyone
So... I've had my Hiace (1993, part time 4WD, 3L 2.8 non-turbo diesel) for about a year now. I love the van, apart from the horrible factory steel wheels. I have searched high and low - new wheel shops, ebay, rare second hand rim specialists, Japanese importers...
Does anyone know of a supplier of wheels that will actually fit my van without taking a lump hammer to the wheel arches? Or second hand rims that will fit? Everyone always seems to mention Pajero's, Landcruiser's, Frontera's etc, but based on my calculations, I don't think any of them will fit. The issue always seems to be offset.
If it comes to it, I may have to consider after-market wheel arch flares, and I remember seeing a thread somewhere of an ex-pat in japan who had done something similar (looked good), but I can't find a supplier of those either! Anyone?
I can't find a source on-line, but based on my handiwork with a tape measure and a vernier caliper, the specs are:
15" 6 x 139.7 Centre bore 110 mm 7" wide Offset +29
Has anyone got any ideas?
Best wishes Niel

I have a 1996 super long it had alloys fitted in Japan it passes the mot but not sure if the load rating for the wheels is correct tires I had fitted are correct size and ply rating. But have seen comments in Australia where some alloys do not comply with there regs also had to fit a spacer and longer studs they fooled on steering ball joint when reversing round a corner strange but spacer cured it so be careful if you go for alloys.

Hi JT69 Thanks for the reply - I was aware of the load rating issue, but thanks for bringing it up. Spacers will work fine for me, but I think they only really apply if you find a wheel that's right apart from having too big a centre bore. So far, I have found plenty of wheels with a 6 x 139.7 PCD, but none with an offset of +29 so haven't really got to the spacer stage yet!
Has anyone found a breakers yet with a bunch of different of Japanese 4 x 4 wheels in stock? That way, I can at least drive the van to them, take a wheel off and physically try a few on for fit. I have looked on-line and made some phone calls, but haven't yet managed to find a Japanese 4 x 4 wheel specialist anwhere...

My LH119 came from Japan with alloy wheels fitted. I don't know anything about the measurements you've taken but the only identification on the outer side of the wheel is NR 535. NR is a bit stylised as if it is the manufacturer's logo. I've tried a brief search which doesn't come up with anything but perhaps it will give you a clue?

I see your problem hundreds of 16" on ebay 15" appear to be a bit rare but are there if you can find a seller nearby go round and try one . You could have your old wheels refurbished and fit wheel trims may be the best option. .

We have Landcruiser wheels, indeed with lower offset. But we run bigger tyres and modified the front wheel arch. The rear is actually fine.
I know that there are older Pajero wheels that have higher offset, I had them once on a Landcruiser in which it almost caused problems with a high offset.

Hi guys Thanks so much for getting back to me. MaIL - I will search for NR 535, fingers crossed. Hiace4wd - interesting information. I will try to source some older Pajero rims and try them on for size. JT69 - yes, I know what you mean. I have contemplated just getting the current steel wheels refurbished and seeing how they look - but when you add it up, even though it's much cheaper than a set of new rims, I'm not convinced it's going to be worth the money... Still, plenty to ponder/research - thanks again for the replies Niel

I quite like the original wheels (which is ironic as I bought my Hiace as I liked the big OTT ones on it), they have a Japanese period and charm all of their own. Plus they are _really_ tough.
I used to like the early Nissan steel wheels too BTW, perhaps there's just something wrong with me

Hilux surf ones will bolt straight on , no mods , they sit slightly further out than standard wheels (which I prefer as looks better and reduces body roll, but still clear arches), fairly easy to come by and proper Toyota wheels so you can use center caps (front cap will need middle cutting for manual free wheeling hubs , surf is auto hubs), they are hub centric as per factory so no nasty wobbles or movement. gen 1 shogun also bolt straight on but Toyota wheels are better option. I have tried both over the last 10 years and really happy with surf ones. example below (nothing to do with me just for reference).
Thanks Cornishpasty - very useful information. Could you confirm that what you say is from personal experience, on the same van as mine? No issues with wheel arch clearance, not fouling on full lock? Thanks again for the reply Niel

Hi, yes van has had surf alloys for around 4 years prior to that was mk1 shogun for about 4 years and factory steels when I first had it 10 years ago, never had any issues with fouling arches front or rear , even on full lock or when heavily loaded for camping trips. sits better on the road because of higher offset so wheels sit slightly further out. mine is a 1994 hiace custom 2.8 4wd auto, part time 4wd drive with low ratio and limited slip rear diff so same as yours I believe. you will also need the surf nuts or new set (got mine fairly cheap off ebay) as steels and shogun alloys use tapered ones and the surf ones use the flat seat and insert type e.g https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/24-X-M12-X-1-5-STANDARD-REPLACEMENT-ALLOY-WHEEL-NUTS-FIT-TOYOTA-HILUX-SURF-03-09/172887151045?hash=item2840e091c5:g:g24AAOxy4dNS392w

Hello again everyone
So - status report...
Many, many thanks to CornishPasty for selling me his Gen 1 Shogun wheels. They are now on the van, refurbished at considerable expense (worth every penny). Just as Rob said, they are "bolt-on" with no issues with clearance, fouling on full lock etc, all good.
See below for a couple of before and after pictures - I think they look smart.
Am getting a lot of help from Extreme Offset Wheels too - once we get to the bottom of it, I'm going to get a set from Craig to use for winter tyres. I think we're almost there.
Anyway, for now, here's what the refurbished Gen 1 Shogun wheels look like with new lugnuts...

Your Shogun wheels look great Niel. I had my alloys powder coated in white a while back, but loving the luster on yours

Neil- they look great! I've been offered a set of Shogun wheels and I'm trying to work out if they'll fit. The bolt-centres match but it looks like they are designed for flat-faced lugnuts, not the tapered ones that my HiAce wheels have... was this the case with yours? It also seems that the centre-bore is a little bigger (haven't tried yet!)- I think 108mm compared to the Hiace's 106. Again- did you find this and if so, did you fit spigot rings to compensate, please?
Thanks! I've just had the van resprayed and nice alloys would look the part but I don't want to have to make any adaptations that would make it hard to swap to a steel spare or difficult to change between summer & winter wheels...
