Hey Hiace Lovers!

This is my first time posting here, so hi! Looking for some advice on our beloved Hiace here.

We have a 1994 Hiace 2.8D which has developed a leaky sump pan. It seems the pan has corroded over time which has led to some spots becoming porous.

Does anyone know who/where we could contact in the UK who might be able to help source this?

Thanks all. Much appreciated in advance Smile

Mine leaks, Hi by the way, I have a 2.4td with a porous sump and it seems its the extended part that suffers with moisture sitting on the flat top part, the part number is still available for my 2.4 but at £185 plus vat plus postage I'm making do and will try to put sum chemical metal on the flat top part to see if it stops the leak

I'd take it off and take it to a specialist welder to have repaired.

If the 2.8 is the same as my 2.4 then it's either engine lift of the mounts or cross member drop apparently, nightmare both ways

I'm guessing new vs repair still needs the same pain though?
Does the crossmember unbolt? In some cars they can be unbolted for access.
Is the pan steel or aluminium?

Maybe Toyota replaced it with a different part number with a better design, not sure how you'd find out though.

Yep, its true that to get the pan off the engine needs to be hoisted...

@MickB - have you tried fixing yours with chemical metal? What was the outcome?

I guess no one has any idea about how to source a 2nd hand one in the UK?

the extended part

Is there any way to clamp a band around this that could hold a nice piece of rubber against it?
Maybe with a custom strip of aluminium that bolts into one if the sump bolt holes?

I suspect the oil will stop any glue based solution from working so perhaps an equivalent of a 'finger over the hole' method might do..

Its the access GPW, it is so tight when lying under the van, it really needs to go over a pit or on a ramp, the sump is quite tight inside the chassis/cross member too

Feen, no not yet its a job to do, like a lot I have Mad I had the rear main seal done few months back as that was leaving a lot of oil, this is a smidge I can put up with for a bit

Developed a leak in my sump apparently it had been welded before. You can see the weld and the oil is just seeping out slightly but enough to leave 3-4 drops on the ground after a run. Looks like someone jacked it up using the sump. But a sump is porous and eventually you will have to change it. I priced the part from Toyota and they quoted me £395 just for the part. I have ground the sump down to clean metal wiped with white spirit and applied two rolls of Epoxy Metal Putty from Halfords then painted the sump with Hammerite. I am only kidding myself of course as the oil will find it way out between the epoxy and the metal. But I would be looking at around £1000 to change a sump which aint good. So I will just keep persevering with the epoxy till I get enough money together to get the job done. There is some good videos on Youtube how to fix a sump leak. STOOOOOPID Toyota why on gods earth design and engine with a sump like the one on a Hi Ace.

You may find a welder can weld it up for you (once off the van and clean), people can weld pretty much anything these days, even lovely seam welds along aluminium.

Hi GPW, By the time you manage to get the thing off then van to weld it would be just as easy to replace the thing. Wonder if anyone can tell me how to get the sum off without dropping everything else on the front end.

my dilemma still Very Happy I will go down the route of epoxy and hammerite too but mine is weeping from the top part of the extended part, access is nigh on impossible as its between the subframe and chassis, as for removing it I was told its either drop the subframe or raise the engine of the mounts, neither which I relish at all

The same problem as me.................. and cost.  What I am going to do is clean off the sump with white spirit to remove mud, as I have just painted it.  Get some JB weld, about 6 lots, Cover the sump with it then paint it again with some form of thick paint  probably red lead right up to the seam on the oil pan itself. Hopefully that should hold it and if it needs redoing every couple of weeks then so be it.  But I have asked Click Mechanic on line for a quote just in case.
