Timing Belt Needs Doing Empty
PostSubject: Timing Belt Needs Doing   Timing Belt Needs Doing Icon_minitimeMon Feb 27, 2017 2:35 pm

Hi All,
Just bought a 1991 2.8D Hiace camper. it is on 107000 kms so gonna need to get timing belt done. Been quoted £440 parts and labour, which includes water pump as well. How is this price sounding - the garage has a good rep in Liverpool, but it was a few quid more than I was hoping. I know the pump is not driving the belt, however thought it may as as well get changed as there is no extra labour cost involved.

Any thoughts...and if anyone knows of a decent Toyota mechanic in the North West of England please let me know.
Cheers

What do you mean, the pump not driving the belt? As far as I know, the belt is driving the water pump as well. Edit -> Oh wait, that are the two smaller belts.

I cannot comment on the price, but I think the Hiace is a bit more difficult to work on changing the belts, than other cars. So perhaps the price is okay.

Sorry I meant the belt driving the water pump!

Yeah I changed my post, you are right, those are two other belts driving it, not the timing belt. My mistake. I would say the water pump doesn't need any replacing, and it should be easier to do afterwards? (as it is not part of the timing belt construction)

Been looking through the documents that came with the van and I found a receipt that says the timing belt and tensioner was replaced at 57000km - this was back in 2006 and has done 50 000kms since. In theory this means that it doesn't need replacing for another 50 000km, however with it being over 10 years ago since last changed, should I go ahead and get a new one or go with this for its suggested use in terms of mileage covered?

I'm not sure of the belt servicing interval on the 2.8.

I'd have a look at the vehicle plate and google the engine model a bit, so see if the timing belt crops up in forum chat.
I'd also check near the vehicle plate (under the carpet next to the passenger seat door) and see if it has the belt change intervals there to confirm.

Changing the water pump _should_ also mean a new thermostat and new coolant: both a good thing, confirm that you'll get this.

Garage labour is _hugely_ expensive now, £90 an hour is common, so the price is not bad IMO.
Only you can decide to do the belt though - if it's not at the interval Toyota mandates.

If it was mine I'd probably get it done as long as the thermostat and coolant is renewed because that's a good place to start and a couple less things to go wrong: as long as the garage is competent.

Thanks for the reply GPW - the interval is 100 000kms and the belt does not drive the water pump, so in theory I have 50 000kms left on it.
The quote given certainly included coolant renewal, not sure about the thermostat though. Will check

Hi Tokyojoe.

This link will send you to an importer based in Bristol that have their own mechanics.. They specialise in Camping conversions and have worked on 'Aces for ages. I know thy arent local but they would be a good indication of pricing .

So took the van to a mechanic - quoted me £255 for the timing belt kit and labour - is that reasonable. Then when he has it on the ramp he says there are 4 fanbelts that are worn....I can change them for £10 each while the timing belt is getting changed - sound OK? Didn't know there were 4 belts....

Sounds okay I think, but I don't know local prices.

There are two fanbelts. But then there is probably a third belt for the power steering.
Then there could be a fourth belt for air conditioning.

Ahh I see, thought there may have been one for the alternator and one for the fan....couldn't work out what the other two would be for. Thanks a lot cheers

get the belts changed, they'll need to come off anyway to do the timing belt. £40 from a garage isn't bad for parts, think I paid around £10 less by shopping around on ebay for the set of aux belts, but I fitted them myself and it wasn't a lot of fun!

Budget for retentioning them in a couple of hundred miles as well, if you are not happy doing it yourself.

Yeah there are two fan belts (so one can fail) and these two are also driving the alternator, I didn't mention that.

Thanks for the heads up - is that rententioning of the drive belts and not the cam belt or will the cam belt need rentiontioning?

This may help, as long as you can match your engine to the diagram.

As per JT69, just the aux belts.

alternator and AC belts are easy enough, slacken a few bolts adjust with a worm drive, tighten all bolts.. PS belt is tensioned by luck as far as I can tell!
