i am thinking of buying a toyota hiace 3 litre diesel turbo but it has a set of buttons which are attached to a handheld remote which is attached to the dashboard the owner is saying this is to cool the turbo down when you are travelling at 80-90 miles on a motorway is this right that you have to do this manually as the owner says all of toyaota imported vans have this on be grateful for any help thank you

Maybe he means a' turbo timer'.........this allows the engine to runon a while, once you leave it...to cool the turbo...then it switches off via a timer.
I don't have one but thats my understanding.
I think they may be ilegal in the UK.........if this is the case it will need to be removed/disabled.
Check at your local MOT station re: the rules.........or search the net......
You would normally use one of these after hammering it......

Well...a quick search...not illegal to have one but it is technically against the law to leave the vehicle unattended while the engine is running.
Why does'nt the 'owner' know how to use it?? Rolling Eyes

I have a turbo timer as described above. It lets the engine cool down for a period of time (depending on the time you have used the vehicle). t was already fitted on my van and other members have said they are not so good. (the engine runs without any air passing through (as if you were moving) so I guess the choice is yours.

On a slight side note I think mine maybe playing up as i have had trouble starting the van until I let the turbo timer switch off completely.

I think the idea is that oil circulates over hot spots...cooling them a little (ie: turbo vane bearings)....+ the viscous fan gets pretty powerful once it senses heat...stationary or not.
I'm not lucky enough to have turbo problems on the old 2.8 clown

I'd be considering fitting an off switch...or just taking it out as you understand what precautionary measures are needed.....
Whilst browsing the legality I noted someone fitting the 'off' to the handbrake....

sounds like a turbo timer... i removed mine as it was set to run for about 120 seconds... which was overkill and i couldn;t adjust it ( no instructions and in Japanese)... i just let her cool down a bit if i've been giving it beans..... and a lot of the nanny state local authorities over here are now enforcing fines if you leave a stationary vehicle running.......
