Hello we recently bought a secondary battery and wishing to connect it to the car starter battery through this DC to DC charger https://au.renogy.com/pack-12v-20a-dc-to-dc-battery-charger/ So we can safely charge while the car runs but have no manual or electrical diagram so we have no idea which is the D+ Ignition wire or how to do this correctly and safely.
If anyone has done this successfully, any assistance would be highly appreciated. Or can provide us the original manual or pictures with arrows to properly locate the correct wire.
Thanks

Hi,
I've not done anything like that, but there are electrical diagrams at: https://www.hiacesoutheast.com/hiace-manuals

I fitted a dc/dc charger straight to the starter battery and then off to a busbar that's linked to the leisure battery and can't see why you need an ignition wire ? It's going to know when it can do some charging and I wouldn't think it's going to do anything when you're not driving.
This is how I wired the positives on my off grid system...

ps. You need big cables for the charger I'm pretty sure mine were 16mm.

D+ Ignition wire on dc dc charger is for vehicles with smart alternator only....leave disconnected

Wouldn't that risk draining the starter battery? I thought that was required...

I'm pretty sure the DC/DC charger will only start putting power into the leisure battery when there is some to spare ie. when you are driving along. You can put a cut off switch in the cable from the charger if you want, I did but that's so I can isolate everything if needed and the only thing that mine does is have a small red led light on when you're not driving and that could be using either batteries amps.. Or both I don't know.
I would think that even if you connected your two batteries together with no components just cables one wouldn't steal power from the other unless something asked for it.
There is also the issue of if you get a flat starter battery and your DC DC charger requires power to switch on you can't reverse your charger to charge the starter battery.
But... I just had a thought.. Maybe your charger has an internal switch to get it running and can't run straight from the starter battery so maybe you should check with the manufacturer's information on it.

The instruction manual for my atemporal dcdc charger states: D+ ignition wire is for vehicles with smart alternators. For other alternators leave disconnected.
What does your instruction manual state?

So it does not work unless I find and connect this wire.

so grab your multimeter and find a source that becomes +ve live when engine is started and running......locate that on the alternator and trace back or engine fuse block.
Avoid a +ve live location that becomes live when starter key is in IGN position only....as DCDC charger will start drawing power from starter battery when starter key is in IGN position and engine is not running
