I was browsing a post about replacing headlights, thinking about changing to LED, and I saw this picture. What is the red thing? I was just looking at the hole there in my Hiace, wondering what I was missing.

Cars in Japan are required to carry a flare. That is the flare holder location in the Hiace.

Yep. That's the flare holder, for when you break down on a level crossing in Japan. The manual has some amusing cartoons on the matter. Don't know how it's meant to warn or stop a Shinkansen (bullet train)?
