We have a 1994 Hiace Super Custom (2WD) and am wondering about installing a carseat as we are about to become first-time parents. We're in the US. It would be a huge bummer to not be able to use our beloved Hiace with the kiddo! I'm totally confused about anchor points and locking seatbelts etc. etc. The manual I have is in Japanese, but non of its pictures seem to indicate anything about car seats. I haven't found any anchor points and imagine they don't exist in a '94. And I can't figure out how to get the seatbelts in "locking mode" which seems essential for carseat safety. So I'm looking for any advice! Or perhaps if you've found an English manual you'd be willing to share? None of the links I've found throughout the forum seem to work (even when copying and pasting without leading /), and have perhaps are expired. Thanks so much!

I've had both my kids in my '93 hiace with car seats. The van doesn't come with super modern iso-fix points, but you can use non-iso fix baby seats either using the old school lap belt (if that's what is in the back), or the 3 point seat belts.

I had two 3 point seat belts fitted in the back of my van in the end by a specialist seat belt fitting company, to replace two of the lap belts for extra safety for my little ones.

We actually bought our '97 Hiace to cope with a growing family. I forget who installed the anchor points, whether it was the importer or my brother-in-law who is a super-safety-conscious mechanic. Either way I know it was done to Australian standards. I have attached photos of the anchor points for the middle seat from inside just under the forward edge of the rear seat (it is a minor headache for rear seat passengers to place feet around the straps) and the attachments underneath. One is clearer than the other. The plate has been attached at either end with giant rivets and the nut has a weld to the plate). The placement of the side plate is just inside the main chassis rail and the nut in the foreground is where the sway bar that sits over the diff attaches to the body. The placement of the central plate is between two transverse chassis rails and the edge of an exhaust heat shield is in the foreground. I hope this helps you to find the positions (at least the ones that worked for us).

The central lap sash seat belt is easy to pass through the base of the seat with good tension, The seat should come with a flat roughly H-shaped piece of metal which allows the upper and lower parts of the side belt to be pinned together so that effectively a double layered sash belt is created on the buckle side of the metal clip. When we put our seat in, we would pass the "sash" created by the clip through the seat, get the male and female parts of the buckle about an inch apart, yank on the upper part of the belt to lock it then force the male and female parts of the buckle together under tension and it would just stay locked. That said, if the seat ever were to lurch forward in an impact it would simply lock the belt anyway so I think we were just being fussy.

I switched out the back seat belt which had 2 rollers with the side seatbelt making the back only have one roller for the car seat so the car seat wont lift up. I also got this ISo Seat Universal fit
I dont know if that would help all i haven't installed it yet. I also used the back strap on my seat belt to hook to the seatbelt anchor since its tied to the frame.
