| Hi Folks I have a 1998 Hi-Ace Super Custom, 3lt turbo diesel, Japanese import to Australia. It cut out whilst on the road recently and was towed to a mechanic. The fuel pump (electric pump) was diagnosed as the fault.
The pump has now been repaired/reconditiooned by a Diesel Pump Specialist at a cost of $2,800. However, the engine now starts, the pump works , but as soon as the revs get above 1,000rpm, the engine shuts down.
The Diesel Pump Specialisist say that it is an electircal problem and that they need the engine wiring diagrams to fix it - But being a Japanses import, they can't get/read the wiring diagrams.
They have now returned the car, which still does not work and say that they can't do anything else without the engine wiring diagrams. They say it might be a fault with the ECU ?
Can't really believe that the Diesel Pump Specialists can't sort this, but not being mechanical myself, I'm at my wits end - never mind not having a car for more than 3 weeks now.
Can anyone help please ?

| Very similar to the problem that I had, culprit thr ECU although this was not confirmed as I sold it on as i needed a working vehicle.
I would start fine drive for half a mile and then die not to start again until completely cold. I disconnected every which lead you could think off. No ECU repair place would take a look as they had nothing to compare it against and nothing looked burnt out. New one from Toyota was £900 plus VAT. Have a look at the Oz Hilux forum loads of iffy ECUs on there.

| A bit late to bring up this forum, But so future readers can see. There is a very very common fault in the first board inside the ECU, there are two capacitors on the back of this board which "leak". There in a guy in Katikati New Zealand which fixes them for a very good price.
It can cause issues from "engine cutting out while driving" to "Only runs until the engine is warm, then cuts off". Another tell-tail sign, is the injector pump makes a clicking noise when you try start the van.
The ECU can be found in the passengers side B pillar behind the plastic cover in-front of the sliding door, (in most 93-96 Super Customs with the 1KZTE motor).
Hope this helps someone in the future.

| Sounds like Burnt Caps in the ECU Mainboard. I had the same problem. Started out with it cutting out and restarting after 10 minutes, then ran for 5 km then cut out. Finally it got to the stage of Starting, running for about 2-3 seconds then cutting out. After some research I come across a place in Sydney that does ECU Repairs. Only cost $215 (Including Freight) to be fixed. Fixed the problem straight away. Very fast Turn Around of 2 business days. Sent on a Wednesday, fixed and returned by the Friday. I highly recommend them.
Here are the details of the place.
SPECIALISED AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS 12/10 Foundry Rd Seven Hills NSW 2147 Ph: 0423 399 286 E-Mail: enquiry@autoelctronics.com.au Web: www.autoelectronics.com.au
Hope this helps. | |

labscty, The issue you have sounds like it may be a Timing Belt Problem. Either Teeth missing, Stripped or Broken. Remove the Upper Belt Cover and check if the Camgear is rotating during cranking. If not then that's your problem. Hopefully no internal damage has been done.
