PostSubject: Bike Racks   Bike Racks Icon_minitimeTue Jul 28, 2009 3:57 pm

Hi All,

I'm looking for a bike rack (2/3/4) to suit my Hiace camper. Preferably one that I don't have to drill the tailgate.

The tailgate measures approx 170cm from top to bottom so I'm guessing this is non-standard?

Cheers

a fiamma T4 will fit after modification... you need to shorten it ...but its quite straight forward to do.....

Hi Jimsmim, the T4 measures 150cm on the fiamma website - it looks like I need to make it longer if anything???

If that's yours in the sig pic, then it's a high roof with a taller tailgate than Jimsims. If you are any way handy at fabricating I would imagine it's easy to extend a VW T4 one. I remember seeing photos of ones like yours with extension straps attached to the top ends of the rack. Imagine a flat piece of (stainless) steel maybe 50mm wide with the top end of it folded back a bit to hook down over the top of the tailgate. The strap is also shaped a bit to match the curve of the door. The other end is screwed/riveted to the top of the rack. (Two of these; one for each side)
I drilled a higher pivot point for the fold down part on mine, as I found the bike wheels hid the lights slightly. Not essential but might be worth thinking about. Might not be necessary for small kids bikes.
Have a look at sites that sell campers like www.poplarmotors.co.uk or similar. You might see a pic of one there.

Hi Alfazar, That's my van so your comments are gratefully received. I'll get hold of a T4 rack and make the mods unless there is a more suitable one available for a different van.

Thanks for your comments guys

Update on the above post, got hold of a T4 and extended the uprights using aluminium tubing from eBay. Needed to redrill the upper mounting brackets at an offset to accomodate the slope in the roof but now works a treat.

Thanks again for those who posted advice and pointed me in the right direction.

Hi,

I have the same van as you and I opted for the Fiamma Carry bike Back Pack Pro. It attaches to the rear door and can be fitted and removed very quickly. I didn't want a permanent rack on mine. Just thought I'd share the info.

I have a camperized 1992 Hiace (similar to jimsmim's pic); does anyone know if a Fiamma T3 Carry-Bike rack will work with my van?

Thanks,
Kyle
