| First of all.... STOP YELLING.... If the pedal is hard it could only be the booster. Get in car and pump the brake pedal 4 or 5 times and then hold it down, now start the car. If the pedal sinks slightly your booster is working, if not then it's time to diagnose the problem wether it be a lack of vacuum from pump(if diesel) or a leaky reservoir or split hose/diaphragm in booster. Try this and get back to us.. Eliminating things... We'll work it out. Jas. | |

| Check the Vane Pump efficiency (If it is a diesel)- i.e. the Vacuum Pump attached to the alternator drive.(Is there a vacuum to the engine management system/air con when you take the pipe off with the engine running?)
If the vacuum is down you will have to stand on the brakes to even slow the 2 ton monster down - let alone stop it. The integrity of the vacuum piping may be ok but if your Vacuum Pump ain't sucking, you are going to be blowing hard when you try to stop stop.
My 1993 Camping Monster stops on a sixpence, and throws all the pots and pans into the cab if I need to drop anchor in a hurry.

| Coming from an ordinary HiAce(we have had a few) to the SC with ABS brakes is a bit of a learning curve. We live on a fair sized hill and our street is like the Himalayas so the 1st time I drove down and hit the brakes at bottom of street I nearly panicked. At normal pressure nothing happened bit harder still nothing, wipe bum and jump on harder and beasty stopped. Now I have got used to ABS I like it. No skid just stop. Hope this your problem find a quiet road and practice a few stops | |

| Ours is a 94 and has ABS and as for the shockies, I don't know how they work but they do. There is a defininate difference between Sport on and off. | |

| This ABS question / answer looks quite tricky.. If you look at the Basic Info post which shows the years / models and equipment fitted it shows ABS or not ABS | |

| Just some other info from the book.. It refers to the amount of freeplay in the brake pedal. With the engine off, reduct the vacuum in the booster by depressing the brake pedal several times. The with your finger press the brake pedal until slight resistance is felt. If there is any more travel than 8mm then the brakes need to be adjusted. | |

| It could be that your rear pads are not fully engaging. The way to tighten most rear brakes is to drive in reverse and slam on the brakes until you stop. Do this a few times. This ratchets the shoes tighter to the drum.
That or clean your disks and drums w/ a de-greaser. Makes a huge difference.

| HI JAS, WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES HALF WAY DOWN WHEN DEPRESSED, IF YOU CONTINUE TO PUT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, THE BRAKE GOES DOWN TWO THIRDS THE WAY. THE BRAKE MASTER CYL HAS BEEN REPLACED, NO FLUID LEAKS ,NO VAC/AIR PRESSURE LEAKS. REAR BRAKE SHOES HAS BEEN ADJUSTED RIGHT UP.THIS VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP IN AN EMERGENCY,WITH MAX PRESSURE ON THE PEDAL.THE BRAKE PADS AND SHOES ARE FROM GENUINE TOYOTA PARTS. PLEASE HELP.

| TEMS shocks = Have a small motor on the top, runs from speed and movement of the steering sensors. The motor rotates a tongue from the top of the shock that decreases the flow inside the shock, therefore making them harder, when you brake or turn sharpely. Test it it out emergancy stop and the hard light should be on, as it will if you sling it round a corner/roundabout. The dash button just turns the setting up for sport mode.
Imagine a cycle pump on soft just pump away, for hard put your finger over the end and the pump goes stiff. Hope that helps?

| Hi Roygee, If peddle goes down 2 thirds , I reckon either back shoes need adjusting or air in the system. Did you bleed properly, better to use vacuum bleeder on ABS brake system what happens if you pump the brake peddle ? Does it go hard and then creep towards the floor ? Who did the brake job? Sure front pads are in properly and not sticking ?? Fletch | |

| Hi Fletch I PRESSURE BLED THE SYSTEM. WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, THE PEDAL GOES HARD AND THEN THE CREEPS TO THE FLOOR. WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF, THE PEDAL REMAINS HARD. THE REAR SHOES ARE ADJUSTED CORRECTLY THE BRAKE PADS ARE NOT STICKING. DO YOU THINK THAT VACUUM BLEEDING IS GOING TO MAKE DIFFRENCE, IF SO HOW? DO YOU THINK THE HEIGHT COMPENSATOR HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT?
THANKS KINDLY FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE

| The only thing I can think of is there is a bit of bypass in the master cylinder. We had the same thing in an ordinary Ace, in both the brake and then the clutch. The brake wasn't too bad but the clutch was a pain at the lights it would just engage by itself. The brake still worked with a few pumps but it wasn't ABS
The master cylinder is behind the dash drivers side a bich to get at.
Good luck mate. | |
