Had a Hiace in the late 80s early 90s, looking at getting my second one now to go away camping in.

Can't speak for the diesel motors, but I've owned a 1990 2.4l petrol Super Custom for 16 years now and never put a spanner to it the whole time (apart from the regular services) Little bit thirsty on fuel but super reliable, cheap to service and smooth/quiet to drive.
