Simple hack - open tailgate from inside

1. Pull off tailgate trim board
2. pull off dust plastic
3. tie some strong string around the top of the unlock mechanism wire where it meets the pivot
4. Make it long enough to hang down to floor level
5. put back dust cover plastic and tailgate trim board with string hanging out.


just tug this string- unlocks so easy


Mind you, you should lubricate everything involved to make it super easy, maybe while you have tail gate trim board off.

Top tip!

When my exterior handle broke I used a similar method but with a length of bicycle brake cable. A screw-on electrical terminal served as a handle, not ideal but it worked. The cable could be tucked up behind the rego plate out of sight. Occasionally it would drop down but a friend pointed out that with the terminal it appeared to be something electrical, not a means of opening the door.
I finally obtained a replacement handle.

Did this on a hummer once just put cable ties in it worked a treat
