PostSubject: Engine swap in Toronto area?   Thu Oct 25, 2018 1:54 pm

I have a 1994 Hiace Custom "Cruising Cabin" campervan, 4wd, auto, with the 3L diesel engine. It's currently stuck in Toronto with a non-repairable engine problem. I'm looking for advice on an experienced shop where I can take it to swap the engine for a non-3L engine (1kz-te, maybe?) and transmission. I'm looking for a shop with enough know-how to help me choose the right engine first. Can any member from the GTA point me in the right direction?

According to a diesel engine specialist, the #1 piston is no longer connected to the rod. The engine suffered severe overheating in the past, so the block may also be cracked. I'd like to swap in the 1KZ-TE also because I'm tired of crawling up hills at 40km/h.

Ah ok, you may wish to read/join this thread

http://hiace-super-custom.forumotion.com/t3500-engine-swap-any-experience?highlight=engine+swap

as people who know far more than me have commented there.

In general I'd suggest you look at more modern engines because over the years they've got more powerful, smaller, more economical and easier to get parts for. You may also consider petrol for simplicity, Toyota did some good ones.

About the 1kz-te. Yes, I can confirm it is indeed mighty and has bags of torque and not too bad on economy with it. It's quite a big engine and you may want to modify (fix) the cooling system like I did:
http://hiace-super-custom.forumotion.com/t3430-cooling-the-1kz-te-in-the-hiace-super-custom?highlight=cooling
which makes it pretty much perfect.

But again, if you're going to go to all that trouble (+ ECU and engine loom) I'd fit a more modern one, just my view! Remember that today Fiat now gets 180BHP out of a 2.3 with their multijet that pulls a much bigger Ducato camper van like a train so there's no need to stay in the 1990s for engines, the game has moved on Smile
