There I was, just bought two months ago a 1996 Hiace high top camper, very happy, telling everybody that Toyota engines very reliable. Checked oil and water last week, all sound. Serviced and oil change 4,000 miles ago, then on the A38 last night coming back from Exeter nasty graunching noise, misfiring
, lack of power and loads of rattling. Water temperature OK.

Towed home.

All belts ok, water ok, not oily. Engine and gearbox oil levels and consistency ok, but I suspect major internal engine problems.

So how to resolve (was planning camping nighgts away in Cornwall during Easter school holidays in two weeks time!!

It is 1996 non-turbo 3L 2.8 litre 134,000 miles. Two-wheel drive and auto gearbox works fine.

HELP!!!

I see that there are secondhand engines from available in the UK. Also parts kit for rebuild from Australia and elsewhere for about £300.

As engine is under the seats, does not look that easy to work on??

Is it better to find somebody to rebuild using parts kit, or to get reconditioned or Japanese import.

Where in Devon/Cornwall could I find Toyota diesel specialist to rebuild.

All ideas and tips much appreciated

GT Motors in Newton Abbot may be able to help you, certainly give advice over the phone.
Ask for Gary and say Townaceclive put you on to him.

I would not expect it to be a total engine failure.

I got a recon engine from Euro Jap in Manchester - they were really good but it did take a while. They're a bit out of the way for you but they did say they'd a national breakdown recovery and they offer a 1-year warranty on their engines.
