| hi. i have recently fallen in love with customs and now want to buy one. i really like the luxury offered by the older super custom ltd but they all seem to be 2.4 td and i have read they suffer head gasket problems and are really underpowered. i have mainly owned turbo petrol cars and feel the 3.0td engine would be more fun but i am interested to know what kind of mpg they get. is there much difference between the two? would much appreciate advise about the pros and cons of the different engines and mpg of both. | |

| Not having driven a 2.4 I can only give my limited experience wit a 3.L... The person I bought mine from had bought several Supers and said that the 2.4 was underpowered.
My 3.l has plenty of poke and is very smooth. (I bought it to pull a large caravan on Hols)
I beleive you can expect 23-28 miles per gallon depending on your driving.
Any one else with greater experience please.

| There is also a 2.8 straight diesel - probably not as pokie as the 3.0TD but i havn't heard of one blowing a head gasget yet and i can just squeeze 30mpg on a long run - doesnt dip much below 25 to the gallon average (and ive got a lead foot !) | |

| I have a friend w/ that engine in a Townace and he had the same problem.
1. Your best bet is to replace your existing head w/ a 3L head. The 3L head is a slightly different design and material and did not heat up as much.
2. Block the ERG valve. This allows the engine run a bit cooler. You will have to unblock the ERG to pass an emissions test though.
Alternatively: Replace the gasket, replace the fluids, and be religious about checking the coolant. Who ever owned it before you probably didn’t do this.

Thanks for your reply, I've had the timing belt and head gasget replaced but unfortunatly I'm now looking for a radiator!!!! Hopefully this should be the last expensive job for a while!!!!!Do you know whare I can source a reconditioned or new one. Ive heard there is a company somewhere in England that specialise in imported parts. I can't identify exactly what type I have, I've been quoted around £160-£200 for it to be stripped and rebuilt. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

| had my 2.4 for three years now and its great .no probs apart from a split oil feed pipe on turbo and wastegate actuator.no sign of head probs and she gets driven up and down motorway.will be pulling a caravan when i get her back. just picked the caravan up with a tranny van and i was a bit worried by the lack of pull when we hit a hill .atleast i have something to compare the ace against | |

| As ive no experience with these engines (2.4 & 3.0) I don't know. The 2.8 motor in mine pulls lovely, even when loaded with camping gear. | |
