1994 3L Turbo Diesel Super Custom 4X4 : ECT selector

Hi there again!!
Can anyone - in a rather clear manner - describe to me the use of the ECT selection mounted on the console?
I deduct that it is for Electronic Traction Control: but when is it used or of what value under what driving conditions etc?

ECT on the 2.8 ...Electronic Controlled Transmission??.......just holds it in gear longer ( via a solenoid in the box) before changes....I never use it...used to click it on in hilly areas but there is so much torque in the 2.8 theres no need really..traction is unaffected apart from revving higher

That makes sense: Have noticed a later gear change when in use but thought it to be coincidental at the time!
