gearbox and steering fluid

Have just changed the fluid in the auto box on my super custom - thought i'd have an ask around to find what was best to use - apparently dexron 3 is fine to use in gearboxes that recomend dexron 2 - works a lot better and lasts longer, its the same story with the steering fluid too (info came from a reputable gearbox company and was backed up by toyota).
