Auto gearbox really needs a forth gear

As far as I can tell my car has a three speed auto transmission. This means that at 65mph the engine is spinning at 3000rpm at 70... er plus mph it is possitivly screaming why isn't there another gear!

Which makes me think. Do the later SC's come with a 4 or even 5 speed auto gearbox and could it be transplated onto mine.

It is just a thought and not someting I am considering, not now anyways...

Do you have overdrive on?

Does switching between O/D on and off make any difference at 50mph plus?

Thats the 2.8 for you...3 speed + o/d.
I believe the 3 ltr models have better gearing ratios(box/axle) that make for lower rpm at any given speed in general

If it’s not kicking into OD at 80kph then you may have broken coolant thermostat or temperature sensor fault. Transmission only goes into OD when engine is at operating temp. This is the same for all Toyotas with OD button from the 90’s and 2000’s.
