When I've just filled up at the pumps I seem to get unlimited mileage as for the first 100-150 k's the gauge doesn't move at all.
Then suddenly the tide starts to go out!
Works out at around 17-20 mpg after rough conversion from litres/100 km.
All depends on how heavy my right foot is however. My van is a 93,3 litre turbo,5 speed.
Added weight of the 4wd system may be lessening your mileage. How much air con do you use? This can make a huge difference.
Something as simple as having roof racks fitted can also make a big difference.

I have been told by a local 4 wheel drive specialist that i can remove the rear propshaft (8 bolts) and it will run as a front wheel drive and all be fine, has any one ever done this or heard of this being done, was told it should virtualy double my mpg..

hmmm, i wouldn;t risk that, you'd need to do more than just remove the prop shaft, I'd also go rwd if i was going to do anything...

Well its something they used to do on land rovers when they broke....the advice given then was to drive smoothly with care...a recent top gear program had the hamster driving a toyota with no rear prop....
You'll be putting a lot more strain on the running gear leading to the driven wheels though....it would be nice to be sure its engineered to deal with it.
I'd make some more enquiries to be sure on some of the toyota 4x4 sites...they seem fairly knowledgable...
Try to find out the real reason why the mpg is so low though!....
filters, injectors, timing, binding, vacuum hose leaks, pump etc...then you'll have the 4x4 and over 20+mpg

Cant understand it because it runs perfect and no smoke, revs perfect with no problems, just eats fuel, did a 140 mile round trip and it used 13 gallons of diesel, and never went over 65mph.mate who i bought it off told me its been same since he bought it from wellhouse leisure 5 years ago.

Binding brakes?

Heavy right foot?

A/C yes use it to demist, also keeps the seals lubricated ready for summer.

hey how about this then

ok brought the van a while ago and worked out the mpg after a tank full or 2

20.97 mpg

there was almost tears i can tell you , ,the way the dam thing kills 75 quids worth just isnt funny , i will confess i dont take it steady just drive as normal , anyway a sea of tears as i was led to believe 35 would be possible out of these engines so i was expecting 30 ( 1994 3lt td auto)

sooooo last week i thought ill try to get something like mpg , filled it up and drove it the week , back to the same station ( still the same price , several arms and legs ) to fill up again ,

i had done 309 klm ( 192 miles )
just shy of 34 quids worth

= 35.35 mpg

my flabbers never been so gastered

i drove trying not to rev over 2 though , if i could coast with a sniff of throttle then i did , if needed i would speed up to get it to drop into a lower gear so get bellow the 2 thou , i confess i did have 1 four mile run at 85 mph and did wheel spin the old girl a couple of times out of junctions , when i remembered i took it steady rather than obsessing , my vans standard except the rear seats which weigh a ton are removed

sunny 91SC 2,4 /2wd.... recently installed on demand hydrogen system. have had limited highway driving opportunity (testing stop/go in town is useless)
I can report 30% better fuel economy. I hope that can be bettered when we have more alternator output available. I believe the stock alternator is 70amps which i hope to better.
Meanwhile a lot of the exhaust stink is gone and we hope when the carbon deposits have been burned out of the engine we will produce much less pollutants.
All I can say.......it works sunny
